Measuring progress

When it comes to kicking off or ramping up your accessibility activity, it’s a great idea to have something to help you focus on the right things and measure your progress against. And there are “accessibility maturity models” out there to help us do it.

Maturity models

Digital accessibility maturity models are great for a number of reasons, as they:

  1. Help us understand where we are in terms of maturity across our business

  2. Guide us in what to focus on next to get to the next level of maturity

  3. Uncover important areas we might not have considered, identifying the gaps

They tend to be self-assessment tools, which plot your maturity on a chart and give you actionable things to focus on to progress on your journey. Each model measures you against a number of dimensions, such as Leadership, Vision, Capability, Processes and more.

Example models

There are some great digital accessibility maturity models out there. Here are some of the free ones:

  1. Digital Accessibility Maturity Model (DAMM) – by AbilityNet (the one we use)

  2. Accessibility Maturity Model (AMM) – by Business Disability Forum

  3. Digital Accessibility Maturity Scorecard – by Hassell Inclusion

  4. Accessibility Assessment – by Nomena

Please note, once you’ve filled in the survey or downloaded the model, some companies will get in touch to see if you’re interested in buying their services.
