Accessibility Statement
What was tested
A representative number of pages were checked from the Skyscanner accessibility site for accessibility conformance. These were accessed via a test environment prior to public release:
Homepage (page)
Business case (page)
What accessibility is (page)
Who benefits from accessibility (page)
Empathy labs (page)
What was Out of Scope
The entire content of the pages tested was in scope.
Summary
The site has several accessibility issues which can be addressed by following conventions and standards. Doing so will provide most users with an accessible experience.
Pages were checked for adherence to the internationally recognised Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA.
As a result of the original audit, 20 WCAG conformance issues were identified:
1 High, 17 Medium and 2 Low priority issues. Following remediation work and subsequent rechecks, 16 of the overall 20 issues have been fixed.
Outstanding Issues
The following issues from those identified remain outstanding:
Medium Priority
There are interactive elements that have inappropriate accessible roles. Some assistive technology users, such as screen reader users, may feel confused or be misled when interacting with the elements.
The main menu expandable buttons have been given link roles across all pages tested.
There are interactive elements that lack appropriate programmatic states. Some assistive technology users, such as screen reader users, may not be aware of the functionality of elements affected.
The main menu expandable buttons lack a programmatically determined expanded/collapsed state. HTML parsing errors impacting accessibility were found.
Parsing errors due to invalid nesting and missing start/end tags were found across all pages tested.
Low priority
There are interrelated elements lacking appropriate list semantics. Content may seem unstructured or disorganised to assistive technology users. This can be found on:
The main navigation of the site, including the links within the dropdown panels, across all pages.
The links in the footer of the site, across all pages.
The cards under the “Discover more of what's important to us” heading on the homepage.
Note regarding the main navigation issues
To fix these issues, the platform this site has been built on needs to be updated by the owners, Squarespace. The issues have been raised with their tech team, and fixes are under development.
Testing Environment
AbilityNet carried out accessibility testing on a Windows 11 machine with the latest version of Mozilla Firefox and NVDA 2023.
Mobile testing was carried out using an iPhone SE2 running iOS 17 with VoiceOver.
Conformance
The pages tested can be confirmed as being partially compliant with both the level A and AA guidelines as specified in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines by AbilityNet.
